The Hometown Hero Banner Program is a tribute to military service members (veteran, active, reserve, and guard) and first responders (past and present) with connections to Northumberland County. Banners are displayed on streetlights in downtown Sunbury to recognize the men and women who serve or have served our country and community. Each banner is unique and honors a specific hero including their picture, branch of service, era of service and hometown. The banners are on display from May to November.
A sponsor (usually family of the hometown hero) purchases the banner and provides the photo and service details. The purchase price covers the making of the banner and hanging the banner for the first year. There is a fee for rehanging the banner each following year. The banner is the property of the sponsor. If the sponsor chooses not to rehang the banner, he or she may take possession of it after it is taken down. Otherwise, SRI will clean and store the banner to be rehung the following year.
Paperwork for ordering and rehanging banners will be available every year starting in February. This program is non-political and non-partisan. For more information on how to honor a hometown hero with a banner, please contact us.
Always the first Thursday of December, Late Night Shoppers offers holiday shoppers an opportunity to support local businesses and area crafters. Every spring Sunbury’s Revitalization, Inc., with the cooperation and assistance of the City of Sunbury, beautifies downtown Sunbury with hanging flower baskets along Market Street. These beautiful flower baskets adorn intersections along Market Street and welcome visitors and residents alike to Sunbury.
The purchase of these flower baskets is funded entirely through donations from individuals and businesses in the community; if you enjoy the beauty of the baskets, please consider donating to help fund this Downtown Sunbury beautification program.
When selecting flowers for a planter, growers use the “Thriller, Filler, Spiller” method. The thriller is the largest, most spectacular bloomer – the center of attention in the mix. Fillers are beautiful, colorful blooms that fill the space around the thriller adding depth and texture to the arrangement. The Spillers are the lovely accent pieces, usually green trailing vines that spill over the edge catching the summer breezes.
